WASHINGTON COUNTY AGRICUTURAL FAIR BOARD
VOTES TO CANCEL THE 2020 FAIR
After significant review and detailed consideration, the Washington County Fair Board voted to cancel the 2020 Agricultural Fair. The decision impacts its many stakeholders; the county, the agricultural and tourism industries, 4-H Clubs, FFA members, venders, volunteers, sponsors, the carnival company, concessionaires and the 50,000 people who attend annually.
“This decision was not made lightly but considering the Covid-19 pandemic concerns and the safety of our many stakeholders we believe it is the right decision.” said Todd Richards, Fair Board President.
The Washington County Agricultural Fair a 501(C)(3) non-profit is Pennsylvania’s oldest fair dating back to October of 1798. The primary mission of the fair is to promote and advance the interest of agriculture, horticulture, homemaking subjects, arts and sciences, 4-H Clubs and FFA organizations and activities.
The Washington County Agricultural Fair is a seven-day fair that includes nearly 2,000 animals: horses, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, swine, goats, lamas, poultry, rabbits and more. The fair features over 2,600 agricultural exhibits – hay, grain, vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc.
In total there are typically over 6,600 youth and craft exhibits (4-H, vocational exhibits, homemade products, needlepoint, floral exhibits, arts, crafts, photos, etc.) and over $5.2 million in annual economic impact.
The Fair Board also voted and approved a resolution to preserve the Junior Livestock Market Competition. The Fair Board approved the formation of a committee that will immediately begin to work on a plan to conduct the Livestock Market Competition during the Fair dates of August 15 to 22nd. This will allow the hundreds of children and their families to show the animals they have been nurturing and preparing for months. The Fair Board will announce the Junior Livestock Market Competition plans as soon they are complete which should be within the next few weeks.
